What's the difference between dairy-free and dairy-optional?

Meals that are dairy-free have no trace of dairy; we recommend selecting this if you child has a severe allergy. Dairy-optional means the dairy is included with the meal, but not part of the dish. For example, a menu item that comes with a serving of cheese on the side, such as a salad, is marked as dairy-optional. This is a good option for older children who would know not to discard the dairy and not add it to the meal.
